Understanding how soil science audits work gives homeowners a better starting point: identify what is happening below the turf before prescribing what goes on top of it.

The objective is not simply to find a number that is high or low. A nutrient can be present in the soil yet remain poorly available to turf because of pH, moisture conditions, compaction, or an imbalance with other elements.

The quality of an audit depends on the sample. Soil is not uniform across an entire property. A soil report identifies conditions. An agronomic interpretation determines what to do about them, when to do it, and what should be left alone. For example, a low potassium reading may warrant correction, but the application rate, material source, timing, and split-application strategy depend on the soil's overall chemistry and the lawn's immediate needs. A broad corrective application can be inefficient, and in some situations it can create new imbalance.

The same principle applies to phosphorus. It is essential for plant function, but applying it routinely without a documented need is not precision management. A science-driven program uses the lab data to avoid both underfeeding and overapplication.
