May Lawn Care - LawnLogIQ

Welcome to May! The weather has remained relatively cool and WET.  The lawn is loving this weather, and while you might be mowing a ton right now, there's been no reason to pull out a sprinkler just yet!

Here is an overview of how we expect to handle our May lawn care visits, along with a few other reminders about mowing and seeding, and our June outlook, which will focus on grub control.  I'll have detailed mowing and watering emails coming out soon, too, so watch for those!

What can you expect from LawnLogIQ in May?

It's all about the weeds...again.

As the weather warms and we head into summer, we begin tapering off the heavier fertilizers and shifting our focus to Round 2 of your weed control.  Rather than one heavy pre-emergent application followed by unnecessary and potentially hazardous blanket sprays, as all other lawn care companies do, we split our pre-emergent applications into three, providing season-long, eco-friendly weed control, limiting the need for heavier-duty herbicides.

Can I throw down grass seed?

Nope.  Our pre-emergent stops ALL seed from germinating, including grass seed.  If you plan to seed (and we don't recommend it. Please wait until mid to late August if you can!), please let us know so we can avoid those areas of your lawn.

Speaking of seeding, here's your friendly reminder - Fall is the absolute best time to seed your lawn, if necessary.  Warm days and cool nights provide the best chance for a seedling to survive.  Our program is designed to keep weed pressure down and thicken your existing lawn through the spring and summer, allowing us to determine whether seeding is necessary by late August.

Is pre-emergent, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, etc., safe for kids/pets?

Yes.  Per the EPA labels, once the product dries on your lawn

(and these applications will be granular - not sprays), it is considered safe to enter.  If concerned, water it in well and allow it to dry completely before kids/pets enter the lawn.

Mowing

I'll have a detailed guide coming out shortly on proper mowing technique, but until then, make sure you sharpen your blades, set the mower height to cut your lawn at 3" to 3.5" (or your preferred height), and cut the lawn when it grows 1".  The more you cut, the more the grass will get tired of trying to grow UP and will instead begin to grow LATERALLY.  That's what we want!

What's next?  Grubs...

We're nearing grub treatment time!  In general, beetles lay eggs in June, which hatch into grubs that eat grass roots and kill the lawn.  Preventive grub treatment is included in your program.  This is an insecticide that must be watered in heavily to reach the root zone and kill the grubs.  If you'd prefer not to have an insecticide applied to your lawn, please let us know, and we'll skip this treatment.  Otherwise, we'll let you know when it's applied (again, usually in June), and it's up to you to water your lawn heavily (0.5" of water or more), if possible, to move the product into the soil to be effective.  If grubs do take over your lawn, they're very costly and difficult to control, so we focus on preventing them in the first place.

That's a wrap!  Please get in touch with me with questions!
